Squeaking or grinding floppy disk drives due to aging disk drives.

Cause:

Some floppy disk drives make squeaking or grinding noises when accessed due to aging. They read and write data properly and appear to work fine.

Solution:

These sounds are normal for an aging or older model floppy disk drive. Replace only if the noise is particularly bothersome to the user.
CAUTION: Make sure the source of the noise is definitely the floppy disk drive. A hard disk drive that makes these noises is a warning sign of later problems.
